🇺🇸 ALEXANDER MASSIALAS RETAINS PAN AMERICAN FOIL CROWN WITH FOURTH ZONE TITLE

The United States’ World number five Alexander Massialas produced a clinic in elite distance control on the final day of individual action at the 2026 Pan American Fencing Championships, successfully defending his continental title. The Rio 2016 Olympic silver medallist dominated a star-studded men's individual foil field in Lima, capping off his tournament with a 15–11 victory over his American teammate Marcello Olivares in the gold medal match to capture the Pan American crown for the fourth time in his illustrious career.

The golden finish marks a magnificent third podium of the season for Massialas, who had already secured a bronze medal at the Fukuoka World Cup and a gold medal at the Paris World Cup earlier in the campaign.

While Olivares celebrated a historic milestone by securing the silver medal, Chile's Vicente Otayza and Brazil's veteran Olympian Guilherme Toldo took home the bronze medals.

Path to the Podium

Alexander Massialas (World number five) faced an early test after winning five of his six poule matches, entering the direct elimination stage as the number seven seed. Following a first-round bye, the American legend wasted no time, blowing past Venezuela's Janderson Briceno 15–1 and overcoming Mexico's Diego Cervantes 15–12. His signature statement came in the quarter-finals, where he comprehensively dismantled his World number six teammate Nick Itkin 15–7. Massialas then defeated Chile's Otayza 15–9 in the semi-finals before holding off Olivares for gold.

Marcello Olivares (World number 36) authored the finest tournament run of his career to secure a sensational silver, marking his first ever international senior individual podium. Seeded fifth after a strong 5–1 poule showing, Olivares routinely advanced past Guatemala's Jose Porras 15–10 and Mexico's Christopher Murray 15–7. The young American maintained a flawless rhythm to eliminate Canada's Oleksandr Budovskyi 15–10 in the quarter-finals and storm past Toldo 15–8 in the semi-finals, falling just short of an upset in the final against Massialas.

Vicente Otayza (World number 68) engineered a spectacular breakthrough performance for Chilean fencing, navigating a dense bracket to claim his first career international senior individual podium. Entering the direct elimination stage as the number 22 seed after winning three of his five poule fights, Otayza defied the odds by stopping Brazil's Pedro Marostega 15–11 and Mexico's Alexander Azuela 15–11. He secured his historic bronze medal by out-pointing his compatriot Juvenal Alarcon 15–14 in a dramatic all-Chilean quarter-final thriller.

Guilherme Toldo (World number 50) relied on vintage form to secure a fully deserved bronze medal, reminding the circuit of his enduring class. The four-time Brazilian Olympian locked down the number eight seed with four wins from five in the poules. Following a bye, Toldo out-played Argentina's Augusto Antonio Servello 15–8 and crushed Canada's Blake Yu 15–6. He booked his ticket to the podium by pulling off a spectacular 15–13 quarter-final upset over USA's World number 19 Blake Louie, moving his historic tally to five individual zonal medals.
