🇨🇿 CHOUPEITCH CLAIMS MAIDEN WORLD CUP TITLE AT PALMA MEN'S FOIL

PALMA DE MALLORCA, SPAIN - 9 November 2025

In a major career milestone, 31-year-old Alexander Choupenitch of Czechia won his first-ever World Cup title at the Men's Foil event in Palma de Mallorca. The World Number 5 and Tokyo 2020 Olympic bronze medallist defeated 22-year-old Gergo Szemes of Hungary 15-10 in the gold medal final.

Szemes, the reigning 2025 World Championship bronze medallist, claimed the silver medal, securing his second major podium finish in recent competition.

The bronze medals were shared by two strong Italian fencers: Guillaume Bianchi and Tomasso Martini. World Number 4, Bianchi, the reigning European Champion, secured his place on the podium before being edged out by Szemes in the semi-final. For 23-year-old Martini, his bronze medal run—which included fighting through the preliminary rounds—marked his first-ever senior World Cup medal, losing to Choupenitch in his semi-final.

Choupenitch's route to the final saw him in formidable form. Notably, he overcame a challenging Italian contingent, defeating Olympic team silver medallist Alessio Foconi (ITA) 15-7 and Edoardo Luperi (ITA) 15-9 in the quarter-finals before decisively beating Martini 15-4 in his semi-final bout.

In the other half of the draw, Szemes had an equally impressive tournament, which included a win over Bianchi, the World Number 4, with a score of 15-11 to set up the final against the Czech fencer.

The final saw Choupenitch maintain his momentum, finishing the tournament with a strong 15-10 victory over the Hungarian for a well-deserved, historic first individual World Cup gold.
