Legendary Rio 2016 Olympic Champion and reigning World Champion Yana Egorian (AIN) rewrote the history books at the SK Telecom Incheon Women's Sabre Grand Prix, storming her way to the gold medal. In the third and final sabre Grand Prix of the 2025–26 season, the World number 5 captured her fourth career Grand Prix title and her first individual Grand Prix medal in over nine years, putting on a technical clinic to defeat the USA's Maia Chamberlain 15–7 in the final.
Egorian's gold adds to an immensely decorated season that already includes a bronze medal from the Salt Lake City World Cup and silver from the Athens World Cup.
Chamberlain, the World number 14 and reigning Pan American Champion, earned the silver medal to open her individual seasonal podium account, whilst Bulgaria's Yoana Ilieva and Spain's Araceli Navarro locked down the bronze medals.
Path to the Podium
Yana Egorian (World number 5) put together an extraordinarily composed day of direct elimination fencing, blending veteran savvy with explosive speed. She easily managed her early bouts before running into a razor-thin round of 16 battle against Italy's Michela Rotili, where she survived a nerve-shredding 15–14 cliffhanger. After establishing her rhythm to out-point Carlotta Fusetti in the quarter-finals and controlling her semi-final 15–12 against Navarro, Egorian completely dominated the final against Chamberlain, allowing the American only seven hits.
Maia Chamberlain (World number 14) put together her finest performance of the campaign to secure the silver medal. The American looked in ruthless form, initiating her day with a 15–8 win over Asian Championship bronze medallist Ozaki Seri before steadily picking her way through a competitive draw. Chamberlain delivered her most authoritative statement in the semi-finals, completely shutting down the highly ranked Ilieva 15–8 to punch her ticket to the final.
Yoana Ilieva (World number 3) continued an exceptionally consistent multi-medal season, adding an Incheon bronze to her previous bronze from Algiers and silver from Tashkent. The Bulgarian star looked clinical in the early rounds, which culminated in a spectacular quarter-final performance where she completely dismantled Paris 2024 Olympic silver medallist Sara Balzer (FRA) 15–4 before her charge was halted by Chamberlain.
Araceli Navarro (World number 20) played the role of ultimate bracket disruptor to earn her first international podium of the season. The 2022 World Championship bronze medallist pulled off a seismic upset in the round of 32 by eliminating World number 2 and reigning European Champion Sarah Noutcha (FRA) 15–11. Navarro proved that was no fluke by executing another brilliant tactical plan in the quarter-finals, out-pointing legendary two-time World Champion Sofia Velikaya 15–11 to guarantee her spot on the podium.
