🇩🇪 EIFLER STUNS BALZER IN SPECTACULAR COMEBACK TO CLAIM HISTORIC GERMAN SABRE GOLD

Germany’s World number 31 Larissa Eifler produced an extraordinary comeback performance on the fifth day of the 2026 World Championships, capturing the women’s individual sabre crown. Competing at AsiaWorld-Expo in Hong Kong, Eifler fought back from a daunting 5–0 deficit in the gold medal bout against Paris 2024 Olympic silver medallist Sara Balzer of France to secure a thrilling 15–10 victory.
The monumental win secures Eifler her first ever senior major international medal and makes her Germany's first ever World Champion in individual women's sabre. She becomes only the second German woman in history to stand on an individual women's sabre World Championship podium, joining Sandra Benad, who captured bronze in Budapest back in 2000.
While Balzer was left crestfallen with silver, Hungary's Sugar Katinka Battai and France's Toscane Tori claimed the individual bronze medals.
Path to the Podium
Larissa Eifler (World number 31) completed a sensational tournament run, defeating a star-studded field of Olympic and World Champions to claim gold. She opened her direct elimination campaign with a 15–6 win over Poland's World number 14 and 2025 World silver medallist Julia Cieslar before dismantling Mexico's 2026 Pan American Champion Natalia Botello 15–7 in the round of 32. Eifler then delivered a massive statement in the last 16 by defeating Paris 2024 Olympic Champion Manon Apithy of France 15–12. She locked down her podium place with a 15–10 quarter-final win over Korea's Choi Sebin and out-pointed Hungary's Battai 15–11 in the semi-finals after carrying a commanding 8–1 cushion into the break.
The gold medal match began with Balzer taking an eyes-open, observational approach off the line, using fast reactions to build a swift 5–0 lead. Eifler responded by increasing her intent off the line, surging back to draw level at 6–6 before taking an 8–7 lead into the interval, a crucial stretch that also saw Balzer exhaust both of her video appeals. Eifler maintained complete control of the middle distance in the second period, extending her advantage to 11–7 before wrapping up the historic 15–10 victory.
Sara Balzer (World number nine) put together an elite day of fencing to reach the gold medal bout. The French superstar opened with a 15–10 victory over Germany's Felice Herbon before routing Azerbaijan's Palina Kaspiarovich 15–6. Balzer continued her march by defeating Italy's World number seven Michaela Battiston 15–7 and Uzbekistan's 2023 Asian Champion Zaynab Dayibekova 15–8 in the quarter-finals. She guaranteed her spot in the final with a nerve-shredding 15–14 semi-final victory over her teammate Tori, mounting a dramatic late comeback from 14–11 down before falling to Eifler in the main event.
Sugar Katinka Battai (World number four) earned her maiden individual World Championship bronze medal, adding to her two team World titles and 2025 European bronze. The Hungarian standout opened with a 15–7 win over Kazakhstan's Anastassiya Gulik before defeating Italy's Mariella Viale 15–7 and the United States' Maia Chamberlain 15–13. Battai clinched Hungary's first individual women's sabre World Championship medal since Orsolya Nagy claimed bronze in 2009 by out-duelling Russia's World number five Alina Mikhailova 15–11 in the quarter-finals before losing to Eifler.
Toscane Tori (World number 11) celebrated a career-defining breakthrough by earning the individual World bronze medal to go with her 2026 European bronze. Tori opened with a 15–11 victory over Japan's Kaneko Yuina before turning aside Hungary's 2022 Team World Champion Renata Katona 15–12. She continued her impressive run by defeating 2026 European Champion Lucia Martin-Portugues of Spain 15–10 in the last 16. Tori secured her podium spot by defeating her World number three teammate Sarah Noutcha 15–12 in the quarter-finals and pushed Balzer to the absolute limit in a 15–14 semi-final thriller after leading throughout the match.
