France’s world number five Jean-Philippe Patrice produced an exhibition of elite athletic athleticism at the Éric Tabarly Sports Complex, capturing his first senior individual continental title on the second day of the 2026 European Fencing Championships. In a high-voltage men's individual sabre field, the home hero capped off a sensational day by defeating his world number ten compatriot Maxime Pianfetti 15–13 in an electric gold medal final that treated the local fans to a spectacular battle of long attacks.

The monumental victory marks the absolute peak of Patrice’s individual international career. Having captured continental bronze medals in 2024 and 2025 alongside a silver medal at the 2025 World Championships, he has finally upgraded his status to European champion, adding to the bronze medal he won at the Tunis Grand Prix at the start of the season.

While Pianfetti took home the silver medal, Romania's breakthrough talent George Dragomir and Hungary's legendary veteran Andras Szatmari stood proud as the bronze medallists.

Path to the Podium

Jean-Philippe Patrice (World number five) received a first-round bye before showing total control in his opening bouts, routinely dispatching AIN's world number 17 Lev Graudyn 15–8 and Azerbaijan’s Murad Huseynli 15–6. His definitive test came in the quarter-finals during one of the best matches of the day, where he exhibited ice-cold composure to edge out Italy’s world number 27 Michele Gallo 15–14. Patrice then advanced through the semi-finals by out-pacing Dragomir 15–7 before holding off Pianfetti in the final to seal a historic home gold.

Maxime Pianfetti (World number ten) showcased his immense championship pedigree by marching through a brutal path to claim a masterful silver medal. The 2022 World Championship silver medallist received an opening bye but had to fight hard to eliminate Romania's world number 19 Vlad Covaliu 15–11. He then secured the result of the round in the last 16, shocking Hungary's world number 13 and triple Olympic Champion Aron Szilagyi 15–13. Pianfetti backed that up by stopping Turkiye's 2023 European bronze medallist Enver Yildirim 15–11 and defeating Szatmari 15–12 in the semi-finals before falling just two touches short against Patrice.

George Dragomir (World number 33) manufactured a phenomenal milestone for Romanian fencing, capturing his first ever senior major international individual podium. Dragomir was in sublime touch all day, topping the overall rankings after a flawless poule stage. Following a bye, he routed Spain's Santiago Madrigal 15–7 before pulling off a staggering round-of-16 upset by out-pointing Georgia's world number two and reigning World Champion Sandro Bazadze 15–13. He locked down his historic bronze by eliminating Hungary's world number nine Krisztian Rabb, who was a gold medallist at the Orléans Grand Prix and silver medallist at the Tunis Grand Prix earlier this season.

Andras Szatmari (World number 54) turned back the clock in spectacular fashion to secure a fully deserved bronze medal. The 2017 World Champion proved that his elite competitive edge remains razor sharp, opening his account with a 15–12 win over Evgeniy Koval (AIN) before defeating Kirill Nasonov (AIN) 15–13. After commanding a 15–6 clinic against Georgia's Goga Tavartkiladze, Szatmari booked his ticket to the podium by out-dueling AIN's world number 26 Kamil Ibragimov, a two-time European silver medallist and winner of the Padua World Cup this season, 15–13 in the quarter-finals.
